Materials and Jewelry Care
925 Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is the most robust alloy of silver (92.5% silver and 7.5% copper), balancing beauty and durability. We encourage you to wear your silver jewelry every day for the best condition. If you're not wearing the jewelry, store it in a safe and dry place. Exposure to air, dust or other elements, particularly those containing salt and sulfur, may cause sterling silver to tarnish more rapidly. With the right care, your silver jewelry will last a lifetime.
Store your jewelry in an airtight container. Wrapping it in aluminum foil or a plastic bag will also help prevent tarnishing. Protect your silver from saltwater, shower gels, shampoos and cleaning agents.
Silver cleaning cloths and silver dipping baths from the drugstore help against discoloration.
Gold Plated / Vermeil
"ver·may" – To be considered Gold Vermeil, the jewelry must have a thick layer of real gold over 925 sterling silver. At Molokai, we use 18k gold on certified recycled silver to make our jewelry even more durable.
We gold-plate our Molokai jewelry pieces in Switzerland to guarantee the best quality.
Vermeil jewelry should never be cleaned with aggressive chemicals, as these could damage the gold coating. Usually, a bit of warm water with soap and gentle polishing with a soft cloth is enough.
Gold
Solid gold jewelry is coming soon to Molokai.
Gold has been used for thousands of years to make jewelry. Along with silver and platinum metals, gold is one of the most precious metals. It's extracted from gold mines or rivers in various countries worldwide.
The sparkling material is highly valued for its rarity, durability and unique color, among other things. Solid gold, or fine gold, is usually alloyed (mixed) with silver and copper for jewelry making. That optimizes the hardness, strength and polishability since fine gold is incredibly soft and therefore not very stable and suitable for everyday use. The so-called "alloy" is then marked, for example, as 14-carat or 585 gold.
We usually use recycled 14-carat gold to create our solid gold pieces. 14-carat gold offers greater wear resistance due to its higher metal content. People with very active lifestyles should consider purchasing 14-carat gold jewelry as they are better maintained during sports, manual labor and other rigorous and regular activities.
